Dr.
Gary Opin, a native of Orange, Connecticut, earned his
B.A. degree from Colgate University and then graduated Magna Cum Laude,
earning his D.M.D. degree from Tufts University. He subsequently earned
his certificate of specialization and obtained his master’s degree
in orthodontics from the University of Connecticut.
Awards and honors have distinguished Dr. Gary Opin’s career. During
dental school, he was recognized at graduation with multiple awards.
He received the Maury Massler Award for demonstrating outstanding ability
academically, clinically and professionally in the clinical phases of
restorative dentistry; the Tufts University Alumni Dental Association
Award for superior clinical excellence in periodontology. He was recognized
for excellence in fixed partial prosthodontics and crowns and also for
excellence in removable prosthodontics. He was also elected to OKU (the
dental scholastic honor society- equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa).
Dr. Gary Opin is a board certified orthodontist (only 25% of all orthodontists
are), a fellow of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of
Orthodontics and a member of the Angle Society of Orthodontics. He currently
serves as an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut and
an assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine.
He is a member of the craniofacial team at Yale University. Dr. Opin
continues to attend education seminars to further his training, and
he lectures throughout the country on various topics.
Dr. Opin is also heavily involved with organized dentistry and with
his local town. Dr. Opin is past president of the Milford Dental Society,
Secretary/Treasurer of the Connecticut Dental Society and past editor
and board member of the Northeastern Society of Orthodontics. He is
on the board of the Milford Hospital, the Milford Bank, Milford Red
Cross and division head for United Way.
Dr.
Perry Opin graduated from Colgate University with a B.A.
degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a D.D.S. degree from the New
York University College of Dentistry. Subsequently, he served two years
as Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps before returning to
Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry, where he earned a Certificate
and Master’s in Orthodontics.
Upon graduation from dental school, Dr. Perry Opin was awarded, among
others, the Founders Day Award for graduating in the top 5% of his class,
the C.V. Mosley award for Academic Excellence, and he was elected to Omicron
Kappa Epsilon, the equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, in dentistry.
Dr. Perry Opin is a board certified orthodontist (only 25% of all orthodontists
are), a fellow of the College of Diplomates in the American Board of Orthodontics,
a member of the Angle Society of Orthodontics, currently serves as assistant
clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine, and he is a
founding member of the Yale Craniofacial Cleft Palate team. Dr. Perry
Opin continues to lecture and teach throughout the world. He is a pioneer
in the development and use of self-ligating braces used throughout the
world.
Dr. Opin has served as Speaker of the House of Delegates for the American
Association of Orthodontics, President of the Northeastern Society of
Orthodontics, President of the Connecticut State Society of Orthodontics,
President of the Milford Dental Society, Delegate to the American Association
of Orthodontics and Delegate to the American Dental Association. In addition,
Dr. Opin is a member of a number of honorary societies including the American
College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the Pierre
Fauchard Academy. Dr. Opin received a United States Public Health Service
Training and Fellowship grant for specialized treatment of cleft lip/palate
& craniofacial defects at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Institute, which
is the oldest cleft palate institute in the United States.
Believing that service to others is the highest form of professionalism,
Dr. Opin has served as past President of the Milford Kiwanis Club, Chairman
of the Committee for Human Services, Vice-President of Milford United
Way, a member of the Milford Board of Health, Commissioner of Human Services
of Orange and Orange Emergency Medical Service Study Commission. He received
the Milford Jaycee’s Distinguished Service Award for “dedication
to the service to humanity.” Dr. Opin has dedicated time to Heal
the Children Cleft Palate Team, providing services to the indigent of
third world countries. Dr. Opin is married to Susan. They have two children,
Eric and Gary. Gary is Dr. Opin’s partner. And, in his spare time,
Dr. Opin enjoys restoring antique cars as well as boating and fishing.
